3 Day Ritual Cleanse

Bzzzzzzzzzzzzz….. My alarm clock is screaming at me again. I quickly hit the snooze button and try to sneak in another 10 minutes of sleep….. for the second time! My husband slaps my arm as if to say “Enough already! Get your *ss up!”

I’m feeling soooooo tired.

The sad thing is…. I feel like this EVERY morning. I can’t remember the last time I woke up with a hop, skip and jump in my step.  There was a time where my body would “naturally” wake up. I had my own internal alarm clock. My eyes would just pop open and I would plant my feet on the floor and JUST GET UP. Now, I’m stumbling to the bathroom to wash my face, or making my way down to the kitchen where my pot of coffee is already brewed and waiting for me, thanks to ITS convenient built in alarm clock.

Now you would think as a fitness instructor, my energy level would ALWAYS be soaring around the clock. Most of the time, it is. Let me tell you, I AM super amped up after teaching my usual two FitBar classes in the morning. Thanks to my BIG cup of Joe and the adrenaline pulsing through my body for two hours straight, I am bouncing off the walls at 11am. Not to mention, this is what thrills me! This is my calling! There is nothing that makes me happier than commanding a group of women and torturing them until they beg for mercy. This fuels my energy.

After work, I head home to get a quick bite to eat and then go pick up the kids. I run them around to soccer, speech or My Gym. But come around 3p, it never fails…..

ENERGY CRASH!!!!!!

The words “Starbucks Iced Latte” flash across my brain, but I opt out, knowing that if I have a coffee at 3pm, there is no chance I will be asleep by midnight. So then I opt for the next best thing…… SUGARRRRRR! I quickly zip through the drive-thru for a chocolate chip cookie and a diet coke (less caffeine than the coffee).  This will keep me going until dinner.

Three weeks later:  the cookie and diet coke have become part of my afternoon routine. Even the kids expect their afternoon cookie!

Now, I know exactly what I NEED to do, what I’m SUPPOSED to do: I need to bring some nuts and a piece of fruit with me for the afternoon. Maybe switch to an iced green tea. But the cookie is so much more fun! My weight is not an issue since I am teaching 10 FitBar classes a week! So my motivation to quit this afternoon habit needs come from somewhere else. I don’t have much weight to lose.

After SEVERAL months, I finally found my motivation to ditch the afternoon cookies:

“I WANT MORE ENERGY!!!!!

AND

“I WANT TO BE MORE PRODUCTIVE!!!!”

When I finally found my motivation for change, I knew I wanted to begin the change process with a cleanse.

Now I must admit, I am the Queen of Cleanses. In 2007, I’d successfully completed a 9 day cleanse that consisted of only supplements and psyllium seed with daily saunas and colonics.  It was life-changing and healing. I had also tried water fasts, juice cleanses, smoothie cleanses, whole food cleanses, the master cleanse…. You name it, I’ve tried it!  Again, the only one I had success with was the 9 day cleanse. Interestingly enough though, I tried to repeat that same cleanse several times, but could not make it past day three!

So when I came across Ritual Cleanse, I knew this was a superior way of cleansing.

Ritual Cleanse is a three day juice cleanse. It consists of 6 bottles of 100% organic raw juices. Three bottles are vegetable juice, one seasonal fruit blend juice, one lemon/cayenne/agave blend, and for the evening, a great tasting nut milk! What amazed me the most was that they have an additional two formulations called pre and post shred for those who’d like to keep their workout regimen while cleansing. What a concept! And let’s not forget, the EASY factor: no shopping for organic produce, chopping, juicing and cleaning the juicer!

Pre-cleanse

Ideally, before you begin the cleanse, you should start cutting things out like sugar, alcohol, processed foods, etc. at least a few days beforehand. This will make your cleanse much easier; less side effects, less cravings.

Now I purposely picked the day after Halloween to start my cleanse, so that I wouldn’t be eating candy all week. Not wanting to feel like I missed out, I tried to  “get it out of my system”.  I bought a huge bag of my very favorite Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups two days before Halloween. I ATE THE WHOLE BAG by Halloween Day. I REALLY wanted to have NO REGRETS.  My children even picked Reese’s for me while trick or treating.  Of course my relatives were there, so we enjoyed a nice bottle of wine as well on Halloween night. My mother-in-law brought over one of her famous Greek dishes, Moussaka, a type of Greek style lasagna. Of course, I ate a plateful! You can’t say “No” to a Greek mother-in-law, especially when it comes to food!  And the Halloween candy………

Let’s just say, I went out with a bang!

Day 1: Monday

Since I was teaching two classes, and I had some wine the night before, I still drank some coffee the first morning of my cleanse. This time, I only drank ¼ of my usual mug. If any of you have ever taken one of my classes, you know how much energy is required of me to teach that class….like a spin instructor on crack!

I get to the gym, and there sitting there waiting for me is a large green cooler bag with 24 beautiful bottles of freshly juiced vegetables, fruits and nuts, so elegantly presented in 100% biodegradeable bottles. I was impressed. I was super excited! Quickly I began on the pre-shred since I only had 10 minutes before my class started and only a little of coffee in my stomach.

I sip on the pre-shred throughout both classes. After both hours of teaching, I immediately drink the post shred. Now I’ve probably burned at least 1,000 calories by now, so an hour later, I’m drinking bottle 1, the first vegetable juice. Now maybe it’s because I am a seasoned juicer, I thought it tasted fantastic, just the right amount of lemon and fruit so it’s not “too green” tasting. Yet there wasn’t enough fruit in there to cause big changes in my blood sugar level. In fact, when I asked the founders about the sugar, I was told that each drink has a glycemic rating of 10 or less. Mind you, there are no added sugars, only sugar fructose, the sugar naturally found in fruits.  Also, note that you can omit the fruitier seasonal juice and change it for a vegetable juice to keep the sugar content even lower.

My energy soared ALL day! Especially after I drank the vegetable juice. In fact, right after I drank the first bottle of vegetable juice, I was driving down Newport Coast drive, when my ears popped and I started clearing phlegm from my throat. It was amazing. I could hear much better. In fact, my hearing had been congested for several weeks now and I didn’t know it until today!

I had not missed food at all, until……. I came home finally at the end of the day, and my nanny was cooking dinner for the kids. I couldn’t believe how amazingly DELICIOUS the BBQ chicken and mashed potatoes that she was making for the kids smelled! In fact, I was smelling even the broccoli. It’s as though your senses are heightened, especially your sense of smell. I was sooo tempted. I even picked up a piece of steamed broccoli and ALMOST put it in my mouth. Knowing that would start the digestive process all over again, I reluctantly put it down. I went over to my computer in the corner to distract myself while they ate. Most of all, I missed eating with the kids. Not just the food, but it is an important time where I just relax and talk about their day with them.

I had another moment of weakness later when the kids pulled out their Halloween candy from the night before. I knew exactly what I had to do. I went upstairs and drew a hot bath, and dug out my nutrition and cleansing books so I can motivate and remind myself of all the great benefits of cleansing. I took my nut milk up with me, the last of the six bottles. It tasted AMAZING! Really it was like cashew ice cream in a bottle! I didn’t feel like I was being deprived at all.

That night, I slept like a baby.

Day 2: Tuesday

My alarm goes off early. I still feel a little tired, but not like the morning before. I have 1 inch of coffee, but more for the reason to get myself to go to the toilet. Remember, Ritual Cleanse is not the same as a colon cleanse. There are no colon cleansing herbs in these natural juices.

When I get to class at 8am, I had just finished ½ of the first vegetable juice and already, I have so much energy! My clients are scared. They haven’t seen me with this much energy BEFORE class! I deliver a clear, precise, high energy, butt-kicking workout! I do the same for my second class, but even better. I am sipping on the pre-shred throughout my classes.

After my second class, I am BOUNCING off the walls of the gym. I think people must think I am on something. I tell them, “I AM ON VEGETABLE JUICE!” I am talking fast and have lots of energy. But it’s a different kind of energy. It’s not the nervous, “buzzing” energy you get from coffee. This is a different, natural energy and I LOVE it! I’m already thinking of ways to integrate juicing back into my life. My thoughts are not as scattered.

My energy is soaring ALL day, especially after the vegetable juice!

I refer to it as my “magical” vegetable juice when speaking of it around my kids. If you think about it, it truly is magical, chock full of fresh enzymes and nutrients. I’m getting more nutrients than I probably get in a week just in that one bottle. And you can certainly feel it.

For me, this was probably the easiest day. I made sure the nanny cooked something for the kids that night that I knew wouldn’t tempt me. Halloween candy for some reason was much less tempting and I couldn’t wait to drink my nut milk. Still, no signs of hunger, not once!

One thing I noticed today was my mental clarity. I wasn’t trying to process 100 things at once! I was able to focus more, which leads to my third benefit I’ve realized so far: productivity. I was able to cross off about 10 things from my to do list!

Again, I slept like a baby.

Day 3:  Wednesday

Throughout the night, I woke up a couple of times because I had to spit. At one point I almost gagged. I couldn’t believe the amount of phlegm that was clearing from my sinuses, chest and head. I didn’t think I had a cold. I took it as a sign that I should be off dairy!

I didn’t need any coffee that morning. I drank the vegetable juice instead.  My energy was just as good as the day before, and people were surprised I could exert so much energy, without having had any solid food for 3 days. By this point, people could see the noticeable change in me, and began asking more questions about the cleanse.

Day 3 was a breeze, as long as I stayed on track drinking a drink every two hours. There was one point at which I was driving around and had forgotten to bring my next drink with me. I panicked as I felt hunger setting in for the first time. I went to Starbucks and bought an organic unsweetened iced green tea. I couldn’t believe that I didn’t need the sweetener and that it actually tasted good to me! It was just enough of a kick to keep me going until I got home.  That was the only time I felt a little hungry and that was because I had waited too long between drinks.

Today I became aware of another benefit of cleansing: ALL of my senses were heightened! I could really smell the leftover spray tan on my skin from 5 days ago. I noticed people’s breath and other unpleasant smells, and other aromas such as those from fruits and vegetables seemed much more intense.  I mentioned I was hearing better on the first day. Today, I noticed my eyesight was sharper. It was like the first time I put on a pair of glasses at 9 years old. Everything seemed crisp and defined, even the leaves on the trees. WOW! Now that made me a believer that cleansing does clear out toxins and how toxins are circulating around in our bodies on an ongoing basis.

I also felt more spiritual, more connected to the earth and other people around me. I felt more alive! I wanted to stay on the cleanse longer. I managed to cleanse until the end of the 4th day as well, because I had some leftover bottles I didn’t drink!

Post Cleanse

I can honestly say, that was the easiest cleanse I have ever done. And because it was easy, I will be able to do it more often. I’m looking forward to my next one. Tonight I had a choice to eat fresh raspberries or ice cream. Can you believe the raspberries tasted amazing and I had no desire for the ice cream?

Oh, I almost forgot, another benefit of cleansing is weight loss. I lost 4 lbs in 3 days. So I fit into my skinniest of skinny jeans in just 3 days! I also felt an increase in my sex drive and I just felt sexier!!!

How about you? Are you ready for a cleanse? What’s your reason for cleansing?

I have been in the wellness business for almost 11 years. I know all the right things but like the saying goes “I can dish it out, but not take it.” I am looking forward to trying this cleanse with my fiancé. We have been struggling to get into the swing of things and this article inspired me to take the first steps. :)

Can a breast-feeding mom do this cleanse? Where can one find these products?
    Thank you!

There are a couple of reasons why you should not do this cleanse, or any type of a cleanse while you are pregnant or breast-feeding. First off, whether you are pregnant or breast-feeding, your body will require many more calories than this cleanse provides. Also, the intense amounts of nutrients you would be receiving from the 6 daily juices have a “cleansing effect” on a cellular level, causing your body to release toxins into the blood and lymphatic system. These toxins may cross into the placenta or if you are breastfeeding, would get into the milk. The more intense the cleanse, the more toxins being released in your body. You should definitely wait until you finish breastfeeding to begin any cleanse. That being said, you may still enjoy a single daily juice right now in your diet. One juice would not have such a strong detoxification effect, however would supply you and your baby with additional nutrients that are so hard to get from your diet alone.
