For Nikki Boyd, working out and staying fit has always been a big part of her life. However when she tried out for the Laker Girls and made it, she knew she would have to up the ante with her fitness routine.
“I always considered myself to be fit, but when I saw how ripped and fit these women were, it inspired me to get in the best shape I could possibly be in.” After performing with the girls her first year, Nikki hired a trainer to help her attain the ripped abs and toned muscles she so admired of her fellow cheer mates. “Hiring a trainer was the best thing I could have done. I never could train at this level of intensity. I would never do this stuff on my own!”
Nikki’s workouts consist of high calorie-burning intervals that incorporate free weights, kettlebells, cables and her own body weight, all based on core strength and stability. This “core training” is what defined Nikki’s amazing abs. For lower body, Nikki does plyometrics, sprint intervals, & one-legged balancing exercises.
Nikki shares that she is extremely motivated to workout at Living Fitness because of the variety of equipment and the camaraderie between the trainers, who all share training techniques, thereby increasing the variety of exercises for all clients. Nikki also notes that most of the clients who workout at Living Fitness are very serious about getting in shape.

“I Lost 60 lbs in 6 months!”

Pregnant two years in a row. After two consecutive pregnancies, Newport Coast resident Marwah Felahy never thought she would fit into her “skinny” jeans again. During her first pregnancy she gained fifty pounds. After the birth of her son in August 2005, Marwah quickly lost all but ten pounds of her weight. Before she even had a chance to lose those last pounds and get a good night’s sleep, she found herself pregnant again, four months later! She was to spend yet another year getting even larger and pregnant.
An all or nothing attitude. Marwah figured if she had to be pregnant, there was no point in wasting all of that effort exercising and depriving herself of “delicious” foods. She continued to pack on the pounds again, eating burgers, pizza and cookies on a daily basis. By the time the pregnancy was over, she found herself sixty pounds heavier. Marwah retired her pre-pregnancy clothes, figuring that by the time she lost the weight again, they would be out of style. She became a V.I.P. customer at Pea in the Pod telling herself these clothes were an investment; she would be wearing them long after her daughter was born.
Bye-bye burgers! After her daughter was born, Marwah knew that if she ever wanted to lose this weight, she was going to need as much outside help as possible to get her body back. She had heard great stories of success about Living Fitness from some of her friends and also had been inspired by previous newsletters to join. The Living Fitness support team “held her hand” every step of the way beginning with her diet. Marwah underwent a diet overhaul. She had already given up her junk food life- style but needed some help in meal planning.

Although I never really considered myself overweight, I was not happy with my tummy, hips and thighs. The years seemed to be passing and although I was doing cardio and eating healthy, my figure still looked the same. I finally decided to hire a personal trainer, so I joined Living Fitness. At first I was afraid to train with heavy weights, thinking it would make my thighs even bigger. But I was amazed at how adding muscle to my body has really trimmed down my legs and hips, and balanced my figure.
How I Did It
My routine consisted of 2x/week training with my personal trainer, 1x/week Pilates, & cardio for 45 minutes, 5 times/week. My trainer was constantly monitoring my diet and making sure I was eating clean.
The Results
Since making the decision to join Living Fitness and hire a personal trainer, I have achieved dramatic results. In just 3 months, I’ve lost 15 lbs and dropped two pant sizes. My metabolism is revved up and I’m able to eat much more now than before, and still lose weight!

Weight loss has always been a struggle for me ever since I went off to USC and gained the cliche “Freshman 15lbs!” In addition, five years ago we discovered a tumor in my thyroid and had it removed. With half of my thyroid now gone, I often assumed that was the reason I had such a difficult time losing weight. I trained with trainers, ate healthy, and did hours of cardio every week. Yet I always seemed to hover around 150 pounds.
When I began training at Living Fitness, my body finally began drastically changing. My clothes were fitting looser and the scale finally started moving in the right direction! The difference was in hiring a really good personal trainer. I have been consistently strength training three days a week with the trainers and doing cardio five days a week. All of the Living Fitness trainers are so motivating!!! They have taken my strength training to a whole new level of intensity. The workouts are tailored to what is best for my body in achieving my goals. Even though I am working so hard in the workouts, the time goes by very quickly and I have tons of energy for the whole day. I am never bored with the exercises. I know there is a reason for everything we do.
Accountability is huge! We talk about nutrition and health every session. I also enrolled in a food delivery system through Living Fitness and learned what portion control was all about! It was this comprehensive program of strength training, cardio training and sound nutrition that allowed me to drop 25 lbs, despite not having a fully functional thyroid! It also helped having encouragement from all the trainers and staff!
Always Evolving. I have been with Living Fitness since they first opened in 2004 and I have noticed a higher level of education with the trainers at Living Fitness; they continue with their education and professional training. They are always evolving to keep the clientele engaged. Most recently, I have been enjoying taking group fitness classes in their new group studio. I am a huge fan of the FiitBar classes and I have noticed major changes in my body since I’ve been taking them.

“I Lost the Pregnancy Weight”

With my first pregnancy, I gained 40 pounds and was able to lose that weight relatively fast. So I ate my way to a 55 pound weight gain with my second preg- nancy without much thought about the consequences. When I returned from the hospital, I had another 40 pounds to go to get to my pre-pregnancy weight. However, this time the weight didn’t come off as quickly. Several months would pass and my weight was decreasing at a snail’s pace. I found it even more difficult to make time for exercise now that I had two children versus one. That’s when I decided to hire a trainer at Living Fitness.
The biggest factor in my success would be that having a trainer meant having a structured workout time and regimen. Let’s face it, nobody has the luxury of time these days, especially if you have children. You really have to carve out the time in your day and take it seriously. I find that having a 5am workout time keeps me on track. I get my workout in before my children wake up and the day begins.
Another success factor would be the expertise and motivational skills of the trainers at Living Fitness. My trainer Ken focused on improving my posture and
proper form for weight lifting. He also helped me realize that I don’t need to “eat like a bird” to stay a size 4. I can actually eat more and increase my metabolism by doing so! My trainer is so incredibly fun and motivating that getting up that early in the morning for exercise is something I look forward to! I’ve finally dropped all the weight leftover from pregnancy, and gained some muscle as well. Now I eat more than ever and still burn it off!

Making the Commitment
Making the decision to get healthy and fit at Living Fitness was the best thing I ever did for myself. At one time, I was very active and enjoyed several sports and hobbies. Over time, my work kept me extremely busy, but sedentary. Recently, I made the commitment to improve my health and appearance through regular exercise and healthy eating habits. With the support of my trainer Ken at Living Fitness, I learned how to exercise properly and clean up my eating habits. After just two months, I have lost 30 pounds, several inches and 15% body fat. I find that I feel better and have more energy after every workout!
