Superfood: Blueberries

There is nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than a smoothie to cool you down. Try it with blueberries, an amazing superfood packed full of antioxidants, including Vitamin C and anthocyanins (pigments that give blueberries that amazing shade of blue). This beautiful fruit has been shown to be beneficial not only for improvement of memory, but for slowing down or postponing the onset of other cognitive problems associated with aging. Try blending 1/2 a cup of nonfat milk, 1/2 a cup of nonfat plain yogurt, 1 cup of frozen unsweetened blueberries, and a teaspoon of honey to make a superfood treat on a hot day. Cool fact: Freezing blueberries does not damage their delicate anthocyanin antioxidants.

If you want to take it a few steps further, you can re-create Olympian Phil Dalhausser’s power-packed concoction of milk, goji berries, cacao powder, flaxseed, blueberries (and other berries such as acai), spinach and kale. Women’s Health lists some of the top health benefits of blueberries, which include: boosting your immune system, aiding in reducing belly fat, helping to preserve vision, promoting brain health (including memory!), aiding digestion, and helping to prevent heart disease and cancer. One cup of blueberries has 84 calories, with 21 grams of carbs and about 4 grams of fiber. So if you’re in a hurry, go ahead and grab a handful for a powerhouse snack!
